I believe in collaborative and educational approaches to address my clients' needs. I believe that therapy is a foundational part of building a long-term therapeutic relationship with my clients. I try to incorporate an educational component to help my clients develop a deeper understanding of their illness and related struggles and needs. I like to follow up closely regarding progress toward my clients' goals. I integrate psychoeducation into all sessions, explaining my reasoning behind the choice of treatment options based on evidence-based medicine. I also provide brief supportive psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to aid in treatment for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. My areas of focus have been anxiety disorders, acute stress and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Tics and Tourette Syndrome, insomnia, and depression. I have also worked with adults with bipolar illness and pregnancy-related anxiety and depression, and with clients experiencing psychiatric illness due to underlying neurological issues such as seizures, Multiple Sclerosis, and neurocognitive issues, along with addressing caregiver burden for some clients. I tend to approach treatment with individualized plans based on different needs for different clients and will always welcome any questions regarding the plan to reach a client's goals.

I am an Adult General Psychiatrist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, practicing for 4 years. I received my medical degree from PramukhSwami Medical College in India and completed my residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in my hometown of Houston, Texas. I held an academic position as Assistant Professor with the University of Texas Health Science Center, McGovern Medical School in Houston, where I enjoyed teaching opportunities. During my residency training, I was extensively involved in clinical research examining neurobiological and psychological aspects of the development of different anxiety disorders and bipolar disorders as early as in childhood populations. I have publications in several peer-reviewed articles and manuscripts and have presented at annual conferences.

What has motivated me over the course of my career as a caregiver? I am a native Houstonian who grew up in a working-class community. Through curiosity and hard work, I was able to attend a university that included people of vastly different life experiences. I was molded by both communities to appreciate the commonalities of humanity. That broad exposure extended my empathetic spectrum to grasp the needs of the American diaspora.

I use a biopsychosocial approach to evaluate the patient. I gather patient history with a mindset that considers the neuroscience that chemically shapes mood, thoughts, and behavior. I am able to uncover factors that can inhibit psychological growth and development. I have experience in seeing how the social conditions of the œthen can influence the resiliency of the œnow. I appreciate, and am proficient in, advances in technology, but prioritize the analog relationship between doctor and patient.

Meeting people where they are. It is an old trope, but describes how one allows a patient to set the path forward. An open-ended interview is conducted with an open mind towards resolution. When being evaluated and treated by me, a patient can expect to be met in a cordial but professional manner. Treatments are discussed and considered based on the mental state of the patient and the clinical efficacy and scientific evidence of benefit. The patient is invited to ask questions and consider whether they wish to pursue the suggested treatment plan.

I earned my Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and pursued advanced training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Harvard University, and Georgetown University Medical Center. I am Board-Certified in General Psychiatry and Fellowship-Trained in Forensic Psychiatry and Occupational Medicine, equipping me with the expertise to diagnose and treat a broad spectrum of mental health conditions, considering both medical and psychiatric factors.

I utilize a collaborative and patient-centered approach to psychiatry, focusing primarily on medication interventions that align with each patient's unique treatment goals and clinical needs. I emphasize cooperation with patients to effectively treat and reduce mental health-related symptoms. My practice centers around medication management, supplemented by supportive treatments tailored to individual needs. Depending on each patient's circumstances, I may recommend additional support from individual, family, or group counselors and therapists to achieve optimal outcomes.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who received my medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. I completed my internship at UT Southwestern in Dallas and earned a Master's of Public Health in Epidemiology and Occupational and Environmental Health from Texas A&M. I completed my psychiatry residency training at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. I have over 12 years of experience practicing psychiatry in various outpatient settings, including private practice and community mental health centers in Texas and Oklahoma, specifically reaching underserved communities. I have treated a broad spectrum of mental health symptoms among diverse populations, addressing issues ranging from mood and anxiety disorders to behavioral manifestations of Autism and other developmental disorders.

In an initial visit, patients can expect a thorough, collaborative discussion focused on understanding their symptoms, goals, and clinical needs. I will evaluate the patient's condition to determine appropriate medication interventions and discuss personalized treatment recommendations. Typical follow-up visits are approximately 20-30 minutes in length. Depending on the severity and complexity of a patient's situation, referrals to additional counseling or therapy may also be suggested.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist. While I primarily focus on medication management, I understand that mental health often requires approaches from multiple perspectives. Psychodynamic and supportive therapies are offered on an as-needed basis in addition to medication management. New patients are provided 60 minutes for initial visits, and follow-ups are given 30 minutes.

I graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC, and completed my adult psychiatry residency training at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, VA. My training has positioned me to care for adults of all ages with a wide spectrum of mental health disorders and related conditions. During my residency, I sought out additional experience working with patients undergoing treatment for HIV, patients with trauma-related disorders, and the LGBTQ+ population.

FAQs

How does Talkiatry work?

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice designed to make high-quality mental health care more accessible. We’re 100% virtual, in-network with major insurance plans, and first appointments are typically available in days.

To get started, you’ll complete a quick online assessment to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll match you with psychiatrists who are licensed in your state, in-network with your insurance, and experienced in treating your concerns. You’ll choose the clinician you’d like to work with.

Your first visit is an in-depth evaluation where your psychiatrist will listen, provide a diagnosis, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your goals and preferences. You’ll continue seeing the same clinician over time, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. Our team is always here to help with scheduling, insurance, and questions about your care.

Do you provide therapy?

Care at Talkiatry starts with psychiatry. If you already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist, they can refer you to one of our therapists if you’ve decided together that therapy is the right next step. However, you can’t see a Talkiatry therapist if you aren’t already seeing one of our psychiatrists.

What should I do if I’m having an emergency?

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room, call 911, or call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

How much will my visit cost?

The majority of our visits cost patients $25 or less after insurance*, but your exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan. The best way to get a clear estimate is to contact your insurance provider directly. Here’s what to ask them:

  • Do I have mental health benefits that include outpatient psychiatry?
  • Is Talkiatry in-network for my plan?
  • What’s my copay or coinsurance for outpatient psychiatry visits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how close am I to meeting it?
  • Do I have an out-of-pocket maximum? If so, how close am I to reaching it?
  • Are virtual or telehealth psychiatry visits covered the same as in-person care?
  • Is prior authorization required for outpatient psychiatry?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychiatry visit using CPT code 99204?
  • Can you provide a cost estimate for an in-network psychotherapy visit using CPT code 90833?

*Includes all patient costs from 9/24-9/25: copayment, deductible, coinsurance, and $0 payments. Excludes missed appt. fees.  Your medical visit costs can vary depending on insurance coverage.

What if I don’t want to take medication?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medication is often part of how they treat mental health conditions. At Talkiatry, your psychiatrist will start by listening and discussing your options with you. Medication is always your choice, but if it’s not something you’re open to considering, we may not be the best fit for ongoing care at this time.

How do I know if Talkiatry can help me?

Talkiatry provides virtual, in-network psychiatric care for people struggling with mild to moderate mental health issues. Here’s what we can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Child & adolescent care
  • Depression
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Pregnancy & postpartum care
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Substance use disorder

Our goal is to connect you with the best possible care for you. At your first visit, your doctor will confirm whether Talkiatry is the right fit. If they recommend in-person or higher-level care, they’ll guide you to the appropriate resources.

What if my insurance changes from United Healthcare?

Insurance changes are common, and we’re here to help. Talkiatry is in-network with thousands of plans. If your insurance changes, reach out to a Care Coordinator to update your information and confirm your coverage by calling 833-351-TALK (8255).

Do I still take the assessment if I’m already diagnosed with OCD?

Yes. Our online assessment is an important part of how we match you with the right psychiatrist. Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation so your psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan to your current needs.
