Biography
I'm a therapist who has spent years treating anxiety, mood disorders, and behavior issues across a wide range of settings, from community clinics to hospitals and now telehealth. I see teens, parents, and adults, and often it's some combination of all three sitting with the same knot: a family trying to figure out what's actually getting in the way and what to do about it.
My style is practical and pretty direct. You won't get psychobabble or a 47-slide PowerPoint presentation from me, just honest conversations, real listening, and tools that hold up outside the room. I lean on approaches with evidence behind them: CBT, Parent Management Training, and Exposure and Response Prevention, matched to what you're actually dealing with rather than a one-size template. A little humor tends to sneak in too; I think treatment should make sense and feel useful.
We'll start with a thorough look at what's been tripping you up, then set goals that reflect your values, not mine. From there the work moves in phases: building a solid working relationship, doing the harder work of change, and eventually maintaining your progress and preparing to graduate. I mean that last part. Counseling should be a launchpad, not a lifelong subscription.
Reading this far and thinking it might be time is already a decision most people put off. If you're there, go ahead and reach out. Oh, and it's Derek.
