Dr. Syed Abbasi, MD

I am passionate about and experienced in providing holistic, thoughtful, evidence-based care for patients with depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, trauma-related disorders, relationship issues, and struggles with self-image. I believe empathy and understanding are the most fundamental components of the doctor-patient relationship. I provide psychiatric medication management and integrate supportive psychotherapy, elements of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), stress management techniques, and lifestyle interventions to meet patients where they are and collaborate toward improvement and optimization of their wellness. Occasionally, when appropriate, I may recommend adding a therapist to your care team for further benefit.

I completed my undergraduate education at Rutgers University and earned my medical degree at Ross University. I completed my psychiatry residency training at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center with training at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, additionally serving as Chief Resident at Columbia University's Outpatient Adult Psychiatry Eye-6 clinic.

I focus on medication management as the foundation of my treatment approach, typically combining it with supportive or emotionally focused therapy during 30-minute follow-up visits. I take a collaborative and individualized approach to patient care and, when needed, may recommend additional therapy by integrating a therapist into the care team to ensure the best possible outcomes. I have experience treating a broad range of psychiatric disorders in various clinical settings.

In a first visit, patients can expect a thorough and structured evaluation in which I carefully assess their symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals. I emphasize open communication and collaboration, ensuring that patients are fully involved in shaping their treatment plans. Follow-up visits typically last 30 minutes, during which I monitor progress, adjust treatment as needed, and may recommend additional therapeutic support for comprehensive care.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist. I earned my medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and completed my residency in Adult Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Program. I further specialized by completing a one-year clinical and research fellowship in Public and Community Psychiatry through Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. In addition to my medical training, I hold a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I have over three years of experience practicing psychiatry across inpatient, emergency, and outpatient settings.

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist beginning my practice at Talkiatry after four years of clinical experience in residency. I primarily focus on providing medication management during 30-minute follow-up visits, weaving in elements of supportive therapy according to the needs of my clients. When additional therapy is indicated to promote recovery, I may recommend that my clients work with a therapist as part of the treatment team. I have experience working with clients experiencing many different mental health challenges, with a primary clinical focus including the treatment of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

I credit my undergraduate education at Southwestern University, a small liberal arts college, for strengthening my curiosity about and dedication to serving others. I received my medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where I also completed my psychiatry residency training. During residency, I was involved in medical student education and resident leadership, serving as a chief resident during my final year of training. I also utilized my fluency in Spanish and medical Spanish interpreter training to serve Spanish-speaking patients and to lead Spanish-language group therapy sessions. In addition to psychopharmacology, I studied psychotherapeutic interventions, including psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapies.

I use a practical and realistic approach with patients to assist them in identifying small, attainable goals and then motivating them to achieve those goals. I prefer to work with adults and relish the opportunity to work with patients who are highly motivated for change.

I completed medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995. I then completed a residency in general psychiatry at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a fellowship in forensic psychiatry also at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from 1995–2000. I spent ten years practicing forensic psychiatry at a state hospital in Atlanta. I then decided that I wanted to travel and spent eighteen months as a locum tenens psychiatrist primarily practicing in New England. During this time, I met my future husband and we decided together that we eventually wanted to live in the New England area. In 2013, I officially became a telepsychiatrist, which eventually provided me with the opportunity to move to Rhode Island and practice out of the home my husband and I bought there. I initially saw patients via telepsychiatry at a community mental health center in rural Georgia and later took a position as a remote consultant telepsychiatrist at Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Maine.

I currently serve as an outpatient child and adolescent psychiatrist. My practice is primarily medication-management services, offered in conjunction with either supportive or eclectic therapy. Follow-up appointments average 30 minutes, but may be more or less. Occasionally, I believe the addition of a therapist is needed and will request that you bring a therapist into your care team. This will be asked of individuals if I believe it will lead to an improved clinical outcome.

I received my medical degree from Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University, located in Dayton, OH. I completed my psychiatry residency and child-and-adolescent fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, in Hanover, NH. I completed my undergraduate studies at Ohio University.

After completing my training, I moved to Brattleboro, VT, where I became an attending psychiatrist at The Brattleboro Retreat, working on both the child and adolescent inpatient units. The Brattleboro Retreat's location was such that it served a large number of patients from nearby states, including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, while also serving as the only psychiatric inpatient facility for children and adolescents in the entire state of Vermont. I also worked as the lead psychiatrist on the inpatient, adult, dual-diagnosis unit, which provided care for individuals struggling with addiction and mental-health related issues, some of whom required medically supervised detoxification.

After roughly five years, I moved from Vermont to Erie, PA, where I began working at a residential treatment facility for child and adolescent patients who required care in a highly supervised and highly structured setting. I also began serving as a child and adolescent psychiatrist for patients enrolled in a school-based partial-hospitalization program. I gradually transitioned from these roles into strictly outpatient work, treating child, adolescent, and adult patients in Butler, PA, before eventually narrowing my scope of practice to providing psychiatric treatment for only outpatient children and adolescents, out of facilities located in Erie and Meadville, PA.

While I have experience treating a wide variety of patients, my primary focus has been treating children and adolescents with a vast array of presenting concerns.

I treat young adults and adults with a wide variety of mental health concerns, including ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist joining Talkiatry directly out of residency. I received my medical degree and completed my general psychiatric residency training at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in West Texas.

Dr. Ruosi Liu, MD

I am board certified in Adult Psychiatry. I primarily focus on medication management but integrate therapeutic support into my sessions. For more in-depth therapy needs, I encourage patients to have their own individual therapist. I particularly enjoy working with young adults and in areas related to women's health, such as perinatal mental health. I welcome people from all cultures and am LGBTQ+ friendly.

I received my undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, and then moved to Morgantown, West Virginia to complete my psychiatry residency. I have experience working with patients from different backgrounds in inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospitalization settings.

Dr. Samuel Russell, MD

My practice focuses on evidence-based treatments for psychiatric illness, utilizing a combination of medications and psychotherapy modalities best suited for each individual patient and their needs. My particular clinical focus is on the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and behavioral addictions, as well as trauma, mood, and anxiety disorders. I offer this in conjunction with supportive or emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. Weekly hour-long psychotherapy may be available if indicated. Occasionally, I may believe that different therapies are also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.

I am board certified in Addiction Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry. I received my medical education at the University of Washington in Seattle after completing undergraduate studies in psychology and later a post-baccalaureate at Boston University. After residency at the University of Chicago, where I specialized in addiction psychiatry and psychotherapy, I completed an Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.

FAQs

Is Talkiatry a W-2 employer or do clinicians work as independent 1099 contractors?

Is there a cost to my health system?

We employ clinicians as W-2 employees. This model provides stability and benefits that many 1099 contractor roles don’t, including:

  • 100% employer-paid malpractice coverage
  • 401(k) match with employer match and immediate participation
  • Paid time off (PTO), sick time, and 11 paid holidays
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME) stipend and days
  • Flexible scheduling in a fully remote environment
  • Licensing support with upfront coverage of costs
  • Provided technology package for seamless virtual care
  • Virtual faculty practice, inclusive of education, research and engagement opportunities
  • And more
How does compensation work?

Is there a cost to my health system?

Clinicians receive a base salary plus monthly productivity incentives. This structure provides stable income with the ability to increase earnings based on caseload and scheduling preferences. For early-career psychiatrists, it offers a predictable start; for experienced clinicians, it provides scalability with transparency around expectations.

Can I work anywhere?

Is there a cost to my health system?

Yes. Our roles are fully remote within the United States. We also provide multi-state licensure support, so you can expand your reach without added administrative burden.

Do you offer full-time and part-time roles?

Is there a cost to my health system?

Yes, both part-time and full-time scheduling options are available. Clinicians set their own schedules, whether building a panel early in their career, balancing professional and family commitments, or transitioning into retirement.
