I practice from a biopsychosocial lens, integrating evidence-based treatments including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Strengths-Based Approaches to individualize treatment plans for each client. It is an important aspect of treatment to identify which approaches and interventions work best for each client's unique needs. Additionally, one of my biggest priorities is to create the space for each client to build a trusting, non-judgmental, and therapeutic relationship.

I believe people already carry so much of what they need within them, but sometimes life gets loud, painful, confusing, or overwhelming, and it helps to have someone work alongside you to sort through it with care. My role is to offer a space where you can feel safe enough to be honest, understood, and fully yourself.
I work with adults ages 18 and up who are navigating all kinds of challenges, whether that’s anxiety, depression, relationship stress, family pain, life transitions, burnout, grief, trauma, or simply feeling stuck and unsure of what comes next. I know how important it is to feel genuinely seen—not judged, rushed, or reduced to a problem to solve—and I try to bring that into every session.
My approach is client-centered, strength-based, and solution-focused. I draw from approaches like CBT and DBT, but more than anything, I believe therapy works best when it's real, collaborative, and human. Every person has their own story, their own strengths, and their own way forward, and I deeply respect that.
I care a lot about the people I work with and the relationships we build within the therapy space. I see therapy as a collaborative process—one where we make sense of what hurts, notice what’s getting in the way, and help you move toward a life that feels more grounded, meaningful, and true to who you are. And I genuinely look forward to connecting with you!

When dealing with grief, you may still be in pain and need to talk about it long after others want you to stop talking. This is when therapy can be helpful. Your grief journey is at your pace. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy, along with other approaches that help you address loss and trauma in unique ways to begin to write your healing story. I have also worked with domestic violence survivors and child abuse survivors.

I am very down to earth and professionally direct. I practice individualism and treat each patient as their own person. I develop treatment plans with the patient that tailor to each of their individual needs. My treatment styles and modalities include Trauma-Informed Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Grief Therapy.
My typical process when working with patients is to first establish a therapeutic rapport by asking open-ended questions, such as, "Have you been in therapy before, including as a child or teen (if the patient is over 18)?" This helps establish a starting point to build a trusting and individualized relationship. My next question is, "Why did you first enter therapy and were you diagnosed with any mental health disorders?" I continue by asking if the client is or has been on psychotropic medications and what brings them back to therapy. I gather all of this information during the first two sessions and then ask the patient if any skills were built during their therapy journey and if they still utilize those skills. Finally, I administer the ACE Questionnaire to assess for childhood trauma, if the patient is over 18 years of age.
I received my bachelor's degree in Arts and Psychology in 2007 and two master's degrees in science, one in Community Mental Health Counseling and the second in School Counseling Education, in 2011 and 2018. I hold a License in Mental Health Counseling, a Credentialed Alcoholic and Substance Abuse Counseling Certification-Trainee, and a Permanent Certification in School Counseling. I am currently in doctoral school for my School Psychology degree. My approach is collaborative, practical, and rooted in evidence-based care. I bring humor, clarity, and a no-nonsense style to counseling, believing that treatment should make sense and feel useful. You won't get psychobabble or a 47-slide PowerPoint presentation, just honest conversations, thoughtful listening, and tools that work. My clinical toolbox includes CBT, Parent Management Training, Exposure & Response Prevention, and other proven approaches tailored to each person's needs.
Counseling with me starts with a thorough assessment to understand what's been getting in your way. From there, we'll work together to set goals that reflect your values and priorities. Counseling typically moves through three phases: 1) building a strong therapeutic relationship, 2) doing the deep work of change, and 3) maintaining progress and preparing for graduation, because counseling should be a launchpad, not a lifelong subscription.
I'm James "Derek" Slover, LPC-S (but just call me Derek), and I've been practicing counseling since 2006. I've worked in a wide range of settings, including community clinics, hospitals, and telehealth, and I now help teens, parents, and adults navigate the challenges of anxiety, mood disorders, behavior issues, and more.

My style blends Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with talk therapy. I use ACT tools to help clients question and accept their thoughts, manage symptoms in the moment, and find relief from overwhelming feelings. My work is trauma informed, and I provide a safe, supportive space where clients are guided toward their own insights and empowered to navigate past trauma and daily challenges. I begin by exploring family of origin history and current stressors. As therapy progresses, I introduce practical tools for symptom management, incorporating ACT strategies and Attachment Theory assessments to support healthy relationships. Sessions are client led and responsive to what feels most important. I commonly work with PTSD/CPTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, ADHD, and grief.
I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Washington, along with a Bachelor's in Human Services and an Associate's in Criminal Justice. I bring over 25 years of experience across Child Welfare Systems, Department of Corrections, Community Mental Health, and Hospice. I am licensed in Washington and Nevada and hold Clinical Supervision Certifications in both states.

I meet clients where they are and tailor my approach using a variety of therapeutic modalities. My style is collaborative and supportive, focusing on client goals while working at a comfortable pace.
In the first session, I spend time getting to know the client's history, reasons for seeking therapy, and their goals. Together, we develop a personalized treatment plan. As a therapist, my work has given me in-depth insight into how multiple systems and important relationships can influence the course of a person's life. As a queer woman of Haitian descent, I explore different ways the intersectionality of culture, family, identity, and sexuality can impact our lives. I am fascinated by stories of vulnerability, always looking for strengths and solutions. I help people feel safe to be themselves and go from where they are to where they can be. I provide individual, couples, and family therapy, integrating Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Solution-Focused Therapy, collaborative conversations, and systemic approaches to address LGBTQ+ issues, racial trauma, cultural identity exploration, and relational wounds.
I earned a B.S. in Psychology and Biblical Studies from Palm Beach Atlantic University, followed by my M.S. and PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University. In 2020, I was featured in Forbes for my study of resilience and intersecting identities in queer women of Afro-Caribbean descent. Past roles include bilingual mental health assessor, psychology instructor at Broward College, and Student Counselor at Lynn University.
