“Of all the judgments that we pass in life, none is as important as the one we pass on ourselves.” – Nathaniel Branden
Dr. Avreliya Shapiro is a board-certified adult psychiatrist who has been in practice for over 10 years. At the heart of Dr. Shapiro’s clinical approach is a strong emphasis on establishing trust and building a therapeutic relationship to help patients achieve their goals.
Dr. Shapiro’s practice focuses on medication management. Typically, she offers this in conjunction with supportive or emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. Occasionally, Dr. Shapiro may believe that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.
She received her medical degree from Upstate Medical University and went on to complete her residency in psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital of Northwell Health. After completing training, Dr. Shapiro remained in Zucker Hillside Hospital, where she worked as an Attending Psychiatrist in the Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic, treating patients with various psychiatric conditions.
With a strong interest in psychotherapy, Dr. Shapiro also opened a faculty practice to spend more time with patients and provide both psychotherapy and medication management. Dr. Shapiro then transitioned to working at Maimonides Medical Center as a Staff Psychiatrist in their Adult Outpatient Clinic. She also worked in the Maimonides Psychiatric Emergency Room, consulting on patients who presented with acute psychiatric symptoms.
Dr. Shapiro has held academic appointments at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and SUNY Downstate Medical Center and has spent most of her professional career supervising and teaching medical students and psychiatry residents.
