Louis Kopolow, MD

Staff Psychiatrist

Louis Kopolow, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience helping patients understand the connection between emotional challenges and the body’s role in mental health. He believes that anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and other struggles are not simply problems of the mind, but experiences influenced by the whole person. His holistic approach considers the body, mind, spirit, life experiences, and social well-being to uncover meaningful paths toward healing and growth.

Dr. Kopolow believes successful treatment begins with partnership, trust, and a willingness to explore change. His style is active, collaborative, and solution-focused. He works with patients using a range of approaches, including psychotherapy, EMDR, hypnosis, and medication monitoring, while recognizing that each person’s journey requires an individualized plan. Together, patients and Dr. Kopolow identify what is not working and develop strategies to help create a more fulfilling life.

Dr. Kopolow begins treatment by building a foundation of understanding and trust. The first session focuses on getting to know each other, the second involves establishing goals and a treatment timeline, and the third focuses on determining the best treatment approach and measuring progress. He views treatment as a collaborative process that may include lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, and medication when needed.

I uniquely combine my education, training, and practical experiences into specialized treatment plans. I typically offer this in conjunction with supportive or emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. I specialize in the evaluation and management of major psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who completed my psychiatry residency training program at Nassau University Medical Center in Long Island, NY.

A story I came across years back still inspires me each day. A man was taking a morning walk at the beach. He saw that along with the morning tide came hundreds of starfish. When the tide receded, the starfish were left behind and would die in the morning sun. While the tide was fresh and the starfish were alive, the man took a few steps, picked one up, and threw it into the water, and continued throwing starfish back into the ocean. Behind him was a stranger who couldn't understand what this man was doing. He caught up with him and asked, "What are you doing? There are hundreds of starfish. How many can you help? What difference does it make?" The man did not reply; rather, he took two more steps, picked up another one, threw it into the water, and said, "It makes a difference to this one." With this story as my motivation and ultimate objective, it has always been my goal, with each patient, to provide superior services.
